36 x 37 inches

Cotton, tulle, chiffon, rayon and cotton thread, cotton batt
Machine pieced and quilted

This design started as a small, sketched doodle and it always said “Mother” to me because of shapes in the center evoke the timeless image of the Madonna and child. Although fairly abstract, the gentle, fluid shapes and soft colors call to mind the qualities associated with motherhood: warmth, protectiveness and tenderness. The central figure is surrounded by clouds of curving shapes, evoking memories of being encompassed, gathered in, loved and nurtured. This quilt was juried into and toured with the “I Remember Mama” exhibit and is included in the book of the same name.
